Actress Kerry Condon to bring her ‘little lucky charm’ brother as her Oscars date

Actress Kerry Condon has revealed she will be bringing her younger brother as her date to the Oscars next month, saying he is her “little lucky charm”.

Condon has been nominated for best supporting actress for her role in The Banshees of Inisherin.

She told Jimmy Kimmel that her brother has accompanied her to the Venice Film Festival and to the Golden Globes and he has become a “little lucky charm for us”.

Speaking about her Oscar nomination, she said: “It’s still weird when I hear it, I just laugh, it’s just so surreal.”

It won’t be her first time at the Academy Awards as she attended in 2012 for her part in the short film Shore, which won the Live Action Short Film category.

“We all got ready in my friend Oorlagh’s house who produced it, and one of the fellas with us decided to take mushrooms.

“I was shocked. I thought, that’s the worst place to do mushrooms, all these people and everything. He seemed grand. He seemed like he was having a great time actually.”

She told the US chat show host about growing up in the countryside in Tipperary and how she worked in a sandwich shop at the age of 12 to pay for acting classes.

“Premieres and stuff would come to Dublin and there was a premiere that came when I was quite young that was going to be on in Dublin.

“It was The Man in the Iron Mask, and it was Leo (DiCaprio), right after Romeo and Juliet and everyone was going mental for him. So that was coming, and it was for charities and if you spent £100 you could go. And I worked in this sandwich shop to get money for my acting classes, and I was like I’m going to blow it on this ticket to go.

“So I bought a ticket to go, and I bought an outfit and everything, I bought a skirt and a top - I still have the top.

“I went, but Leo cancelled the day before. So, I returned the skirt, but I kept the top.”

However Condon told how she had another opportunity to meet DiCaprio when she was aged 19 and flew to Los Angles to secure an agent.

“We went to celebrate at the Chatau Le Mas De Montet because when in Rome, and he was there, and I was like ‘oh my god’. But I went to the bathroom and while I was in there, he came over asked could he have one of my cigarettes.”
