JJ Abrams wants his Star Wars film to feel as authentic as the first one

JJ Abrams has promised fans that his new Star Wars film will feel "authentic".

The filmmaker is directing the eagerly anticipated Episode VII, which is due to hit cinemas in 2015, and while plot and casting details are under wraps he did tell Entertainment Weekly that he is hoping it will be faithful to the much-loved sci-fi franchise.

Asked which of the previous Star Wars films best exemplifies what he is aiming to do in terms of the tone of the movie, JJ said: "It's impossible for me to say because it's going to be an evolving thing. I would say we are working really hard to make a movie that feels as emotional and authentic and exciting as possible.

"Whatever your favourite Star Wars movie is and how you compare it is really sort of subjective."

The internet has been buzzing with speculation and suggestions for the movie since it was revealed that Star Wars would be rebooted.

JJ said: " It's been nice see that how important it is and to be reminded how important it is to so many people.

"We all know that (Star Wars creator George Lucas') dream has become almost a religion to some people. I remember reading a thing somewhere, someone wrote about just wanting (Episode VII) to feel real; to feel authentic. I remember I felt that way when I was 11 years old when I saw the first one. As much of a fairytale as it was, it felt real. And to me, that is exactly right."

So far no actors have been confirmed for the film although the original stars Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher are thought to be on board.

Other names that have been linked to the movie include David Oyelowo, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alex Pettyfer, Michael B Jordan and Saoirse Ronan.

Official casting announcements are expected around October, before production starts in January 2014.
