Benicio Del Toro will not be playing villain Khan Noonien Singh in the Star Trek sequel, director JJ Abrams has said.

The Oscar-winning star had been tipped to play the genetically engineered superhuman, deemed one of the greatest screen baddies in the series, in the upcoming follow-up to 2009's successful reboot.

But JJ issued a firm reply to HitFix.com, stating that the rumour was "not true".

Ricardo Montalban played Khan in Nicholas Meyer's 1982 Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan.

Most of the cast from the previous Star Trek instalment, directed by the same filmmaker, are expected to return for the 3D sequel, including Chris Pine, Simon Pegg and Zachary Quinto.

Alice Eve is also said to be in talks to appear.

Production is expected to start on the sequel in early 2012 and the film is set for release in May 2013.
