12 Years A Slave has topped the UK box office on its opening weekend.

Steve McQueen's Golden Globe-winning slavery drama, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Lupita Nyong'o and Brad Pitt, took first place after earning £2.5 million.

It held off competition from American Hustle, which took the second spot, and has already surpassed Steve's previous film, Shame, which banked £2 million on its cinematic run, reported Screen Daily.

Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug slipped to number three on its fifth week on release, while Disney's animated hit Frozen and Last Vegas sat in fourth and fifth places respectively.

Post-war drama The Railway Man, starring Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman, premiered at number six, followed by Vince Vaughn's comedy Delivery Man in the seventh spot.

Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, starring Idris Elba as the late South African leader and Naomie Harris as his second wife Winnie, took eighth place, with Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues and Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones rounding off the top 10.

Martin Scorsese's The Wolf Of Wall Street, starring Golden Globe winner Leonardo DiCaprio as New York stockbroker Jordan Belfort, and horror thriller Devil's Due will be released this week.
