Lunchbox: Eddie Rockets

Parnell Centre, Parnell Street, D1. Tel: 01 8728076

Sophie Gorman

The Cost: €9.50 for Classic Hamburger Combo (with fries and soft drink).

The Look: Old school. Eddie Rockets has been in Ireland for more than 20 years and has never strayed from its all-American red and white design. But this branch is sparklingly clean. and, with a mini-jukebox in every booth, you get to pick your own soundtrack.

The Goods: Everything you would expect at a traditional diner, from nachos, hot dogs and meatballs to knickerbocker glories, but most people do come for the burgers.

The Bad: My classic burger is served on an impossibly teeny saucer and most of the fries are dusted in an unexpected and possibly accidental red seasoning.

The Result: Definitely a step up from their neighbouring fast-food joints. This burger is huge and very tasty, and the slightly spicy fries are nicely crispy. My saucer is instantly replaced with a suitably large plate by the attentive staff.

The grade: B+.
