RTE sports presenter Des Cahill is the latest big name rumoured to be waltzing onto Dancing with the Stars.

The well-known personality, who fronts Saturday Sport on RTE Radio 1, has been mooted as one of the possible contestants on the flagship RTE programme.

Des is one of Ireland's most recognisable TV faces due to his work on the likes of the Sunday Game and Up for the Match and was recently named Twitter's most influential Irish journalist.

Lining up on the dancing show wouldn't be his first foray into light entertainment either, as he previously displayed his culinary skills on The Restaurant.

Details of who is taking part have been kept tightly under wraps but RTE insiders say the rest of the names will be confirmed later this week.

Westlife star Nicky Byrne and Amanda Byram were unveiled as the two main presenters on Tuesday while 2fm presenter Blathnaid Treacy will front the spin-off show.

When asked about the Irish celebrities set to take part, Byram said she was excited about the decision by producers to choose some of what she called "left-field" personalities.

"The thing I love about the line up is that they are not the usual suspects," she said.

"It's people that, to me, came from left-field."

Amanda said they want to make it "a massive show" and will incorporate staff with vast experience in producing the popular franchise.

"There's a lot of international talent from people who have worked on other Strictlys around the world," she said.

The show, which replaces the Voice of Ireland in the Sunday night schedule, will kick off in style on Sunday, January 8 and run until the end of March.

Those working on the new show also went over to see the BBC version first-hand so they could pick up some tips.

Some of the other stars linked with the show include Big Brother's Hughie Maughan, model Thalia Heffernan and RTE reporter Teresa Mannion, who became a viral sensation last year after her weather report from a storm-battered Galway got millions of hits on YouTube.

New presenter Nicky Byrne took part in the UK version of the show in 2012.

He said that despite having a much smaller budget, the new Irish show will "still look a million dollars".
