Studies in success: The dynamic singer-songwriter is in fifth year in school. It's been a busy year. "Some artists struggled to write in lockdown, but I was writing away, figuring out what was next. This is my career and I needed to learn some new skills, like producing."

She released two songs, Deja Vu and Crash. First steps: It all began three years ago when she put out a cover of Billie Eilish's Watch on her Instagram, @nellmescal.

"I'd been singing my whole life - on stage, in musical theatre and pantomimes - and writing songs since I was 13, but this was different. I was putting it out for everyone to see. It was nerve-racking."

It got a great response and she carried on.

Family affair: She also did a dreamy cover of Villagers' Nothing Arrived with her brother Paul. (Yes, that Paul Mescal.)

Music and performing is in the genes. Her parents, Dearbhla and Paul, met while taking part in an amateur drama operetta - The Pirates of Penzance. Nell and her brothers, Paul (24) and Donnacha (21), were sent to piano lessons. She has been in the youth choir, SpeakUp SingOut, since she was 11.

What's next: Nell also works as a cleaner in her local hotel. Now that she's back in school, it's about finding a rhythm. "I want to be on Broadway, the West End, and be a recording artist. That's the plan."
