Several Irish secondary schools took part in the Millfield Championship in England last week. A team from St. Benildus won the Major group, while Gonzaga won the main event for the second time in a row.

Its leader Conor O'Donnell scored 7 points in 7 games -and received a trophy for the best tournament performance. I'd like to show one of his games:

Grieve - O'Donnell

1.d4 e6 2.e4 d5

3.Nc3 Bb4 4.e5 Ne7

5.a3 Bxc3+ 6.bxc3 c5

7.Qg4 0-0 8.Nf3?!

This natural move isn't best - White should have played 8.Bd3 first.

8...Nbc6

9.Bd3 f5 10.exf6 Rxf6

11.Bg5 e5 12.Qg3 (D)

It may seem that White has the upper hand thanks to the threats of 13.Bxf6 and 13.dxe5, but Conor seized the initiative with a topical sacrifice:

12...Rxf3!

13.gxf3 c4 14.Bf6?! Qf8!

15.Bxe7 Qxe7 16.Be2 exd4

17.Kf1 Bf5 18.Re1 Qf6

19.Bd1 dxc3 20.Rg1 d4

21.f4 Rf8 22.Kg2 d3

23.cxd3 cxd3 24.Bb3+ Kh8 0-1
