Speculation has been rife of late that Naughty Dog is currently working on The Last of Us 2, but apparently the team has just been brainstorming ideas.
Naughty Dog has come out to respond to speculation that The Last of Us 2 is currently in development. Flames were fanned after Naughty Dog referred to The Last of Us as "the first The Last of Us" while voice actor Nolan North has previously said that a sequel is in development.
The Last of Us’ creative director Neil Druckmann said that he and Bruce Straley have brainstormed ideas for a sequel, but nothing concrete is in place just yet. Uncharted 4 is the reason that progress of a Last of Us sequel was put on hold, according to Druckmann.
In an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine, he revealed, “When Bruce and I moved over to Uncharted 4, we were brainstorming ideas for The Last of Us 2 with new characters; ideas for TLOU 2 with Joel and Ellie; ideas for a sci-fi game; ideas for a fantasy game, and building prototypes for each one of those ideas. And just as we were getting close to settling or narrowing that list down, we were asked to work on Uncharted 4"
He added that the team won’t know what it’s doing next until a couple of months after wrapping up Uncharted 4.
The Last of Us 2 is likely to happen at some point, but not in the very near future.
