Talent from Disney, Dreamworks, Pixar to attend first Kilkenny Animated Festival hosted by Cartoon Saloon

Kilkenny-based animation studio, Cartoon Saloon, is hosting the first ever Kilkenny Animated Festival next month.

Cartoon Saloon has been nominated for an Academy Award twice for stunning films The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea and its latest offering, The Breadwinner, was recently nominated for a Golden Globe.

Kilkenny Animated is a new festival of visual storytelling incorporating cartoons, animation and illustration in a series of exhibitions, talks, performances and workshops which will run over the weekend of Feb 23-25.

Set against and inspired by the backdrop of Kilkenny's medieval streets and slipways it will feature stand up comedy with 2D animation and projections from Bec Hill and Howard Read as well as award-winning dance with live animation from Hungarian group Bandart.

TG4's new series Cul an Ti will have its premiere with live music from Kila, Lisa Hannigan and special guests. Cul an Ti series celebrates the Irish traditional song in all its haunting beauty with beautiful hand drawn animated films made by Paper Panther and Cartoon Saloon.

The Breadwinner will also have its Hometown Gala Premiere at the Watergate Theatre with a special post -show interview with director, Nora Twomey.

Character designers, illustrators, animators and cartoonists from Disney, Dreamworks, Pixar and New Yorker magazine, will be among those delivering workshops, talks and slideshows.

A huge exhibition of more than 200 pieces from these artists will take place over the weekend in the Goods Shed at MacDonagh Junction.

There’ll also be an exhibition of street art and graffiti in one of the old Smithwick’s Brewery buildings in the Abbey Quarter featuring local artists Mick Minogue and Dan Leo and a sketching walking tour of historic sites in Kilkenny city that inspired and feature in the forthcoming Cartoon Saloon feature, Wolfwalkers.

The festival has been developed in partnership with Fáilte Ireland as part of the Ireland's Ancient East.
