The streets of Mullingar will be transformed into a living timeline this summer as part of the inaugural Heart of Ireland festival.

The two-day street festival, which takes place from July 11-12, hopes to put "Mullingar on the map" by reaching out to expatriates and celebrating the rich heritage of Joe Dolan's birthplace.

A living timeline charting the past 100 years in Ireland will wind through the streets, complete with jazz bands, street theatre and an open-air cinema allowing those of Irish heritage to "reconnect where their family left off".

Mullingar is also the birthplace of the late Josephine Hart, the first female director of Haymarket, bestselling author, West End theatre producer and a champion of struggling poets, and there will be poetry workshops in conjunction with local schools in her memory.

The festival will also acknowledge those who possess a heart of gold.

The contest is open to men and women over the age of 50 "who do their best daily to make the world a better place".

The deadline for international nominees is May 31.
