Independent.ie took to the streets of Dublin to ask the public what exactly St Patrick's Day means to them.
Should it remain as a national public holiday? Do parades still resonate with the Irish public?
We talked to men and women in Dublin's city centre to hear their views.
“It means a day off for me now. I used to come into town with friends but now I feel town is so busy, I’d rather stay at home,” one woman said.
For those living abroad though, perhaps the day still holds a place in their heart.
"[I] lived in America for years, and I used to take a day off because it was very special to me because I am Irish. So when I’m here now, I like to go to the parade. I love the Americans coming over here and seeing all the different nationalities," another woman said.
