With thousands of Culture Night events taking place around the country, picking the best of the bunch can be a bit of a headache. Here are some of the highlights:

Joe Caslin created a buzz this year when his mural of two men embracing on Dublin's South Great George's Street caught the nation's attention. Now he has returned to his home town of Tullamore, Co Offaly, decorating the Municipal Office with a striking sketch.

Cork Ignite will see the College of Commerce light up with spinning and spiralling 3D graphics.

A giant game of Snakes and Ladders will be played out on Dublin's O'Connell Street.

TV chef Rick Stein will hold court in Hodges Figgis on Dublin's Dawson Street.

Castletown House in Kildare is hosting Shackleton's Endurance, about the explorer's Antarctic adventures with music by the Kildare Orchestra.

The Celtic Myth of the Salmon of Knowledge will be re-enacted as part of the Taste of Mungret in Limerick. After the curtain falls, audience members can eat the star of the show and see if they're any wiser.
