Two days ago French GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave won a leg of the Grand Blitz and Rapid Chess Tour in Paris. The winner scored 21 points, while 49-year old Viswanathan Anand came second with 20.5 points.
Another Indian player - 13-year-old Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa - has just won a very strong open tournament in Denmark, scoring 8.5 points in 10 games and adding nearly 30 points to his already impressive rating of 2540! The following game was played in that tournament:
SB Hansen - Welling
1.c4 e5 2.Nc3 d6
3.g3 f5 4.Bg2 Nf6
5.d4 Be7 6.Nf3 e4
7.Ng5 h6 8.Nh3 g5?!
This pawn advance may look attractive, but in fact Black is simply over-extending himself.
9.d5 c5 10.f3! exf3
11.exf3 Nbd7 12.0-0 Nf8
13.Qc2 Bd7 14.Bd2 Ng6
15.Rae1 0-0 16.f4 g4
17.Nf2 a6? (D)
Visually, Black's position looks fine - but the Danish Grandmaster quickly proved that that was an optical illusion:
18.Re6! Bxe6 19.dxe6 Ne8
20.Nxg4 Kh7 21.Ne3 Ng7
