Last year it looked as if the World Champion Magnus Carlsen was first among equals - but his fantastic results this year have created a big distance between him and the rest of the top players.

A week ago Carlsen won the Grenke Classic tournament in Germany, scoring 7.5 points in 9 games with a 2,983 rating performance. Fabiano Caruana finished second with 6 points. Carlsen's current rating is 2,875, while Caruana is second with 2,819 and Ding Liren is third with 2,805.

The World senior team championships recently took place in Rhodes. In the 50+ section, the USA won very convincingly, scoring 17 points out of 18. Italy finished second on 14 points, while Israel took the bronze medal with 12 points.

In the 65+ group Russia won with 14 points, while England, France and Israel finished on 13 points each. Ireland had teams in both groups, doing particularly well in the 50+ section, where it finished in 13th place.

The following game, played in Rhodes, featured the same Greek Gift sacrifice as the game shown in this column last week.
