Sophia Loren shares story behind infamous ‘side eye’ photo with Jayne Mansfield
Screen icon Sophia Loren reveals what was going through her head the moment the photographer snapped the famous picture.
In one of the most famous photos from Hollywood’s golden era, Loren is seen eyeing up Jayne Mansfield’s cleavage as the blonde star beams into the camera.
The series of famous photos, taken at a cocktail party in the Beverly Hills Hotel in 1957, captured American actress Jayne’s bosom spilling over her dress as she reached across the table.
It is believed the images were part of a publicity stunt, but the one that is best remembered shows Sophia giving Jayne some serious side-eye daggers.
Over half a century later, Sophia explained to Entertainment Weekly, "I'm staring at her nipples because I am afraid they are about to come onto my plate,"
The 80-year-old film icon added, "In my face you can see the fear. I'm so frightened that everything in her dress is going to blow—BOOM!—and spill all over the table."
Loren's memoir, which recounts fascinating anecdotes from her expansive career, is released tomorrow.
