severed arm and cigar-smoking monkey light up comedy caper

Myles McWeeney

Former detective Andrew Yancey, suspended from his Florida Keys police department for doing something unmentionable with a hand-held vacuum cleaner to his girlfriend's husband, has been given custody of a severed arm snagged by a tourist on a fishing charter.

Working out his suspension as a restaurant inspector, on what he calls "roach patrol", he figures if he can solve the mystery of the arm, he'll get his job back. What he gets instead is a whole heap of potentially lethal trouble and an introduction to a hard-drinking, cigar-smoking, psoriasis-suffering, nappy-wearing monkey said to have once been a star in Pirates of the Caribbean.

A number of desperate and homicidal people also have reasons to find out who owned the arm, and none of these reasons have anything to do with law enforcement. A laugh-out-loud comedy caper that contains a number of serious messages delivered with Carl Hiaasen's signature mordant and impeccably timed wit.
