Sarah’s magic touch lands the writer a three-book deal
A DUBLIN-BASED author is heading in the same direction as JK Rowling after landing a threebook fantasy fiction deal.
Sarah Rees Brennan has proven she too has the magic touch and is soon to be published in the UK and US.
Her series The Demon's Lexicon will see her make a debut as an author, but the writer has already created a fan base with her online blog.
Four thousand people are registered to read her movie parodies, book reviews, original stories and fan fiction.
Similar to the Harry Potter books, The Demon's Lexicon tells the story of a teenage boy living with a magical secret.
Nick (16) is from London and he has been on the run from magicians for his whole life because his mother stole a powerful charm from them. The teen's father is dead and when his older brother's life comes under threat, things get more serious and a cat and mouse chase ensues.
Sarah's books are not for kids but are aimed at the young adults market. She hopes to tap into the growing appetite for fantasy books like the Lord of the Ring series, and Artemis Fowl.
Her trilogy has all the ingredients to follow in their successful footsteps including another reality, sword and magic battles and a brotherly bond.
The first instalment, to be published in the summer of 2009, promises to be a compelling tale, full of mystery, passion and danger, set in the dark shadows of contemporary London.
Readers will have to wait a further year then between the next two books with the trilogy planned to conclude in 2011.
Sarah is still putting the final touches on the Nick's adventures from her Dublin base. Simon & Schuster UK Ltd announced the deal to buy the US and UK rights to her books yesterday.
“My torrid love affair with fantasy began as an eight-year-old when I was let loose for the first time in my local library, so publishing a fantasy trilogy is my dream, incredibly come true,” said Sarah.
Ingrid Selberg, publishing director, said they were excited to have a new talent like Sarah on board.
“Sarah Rees Brennan is an amazing talent and we are thrilled to add her to our list of stunning debut authors,” she said.
Simon & Schuster's stable of authors includes Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black who wrote The Spiderwick Chronicles, which was recently made into a film of the same name starring Irish schoolgirl Sarah Bolger (17).
