Review: The Expats by Chris Pavone

When her computer security analyst husband Dexter tells Kate Moore he's accepted a job in Luxembourg, she sees it as a perfect opportunity to quit her top-secret job in the CIA and start a new life with him and their two little boys.

But when they are aggressively befriended by Julia and Bill, another American expat couple, Kate's CIA-honed hackles rise.

She suspects they may not be who or what they say they are, and as she utilises her professional tradecraft to investigate them she discovers that she might not be, as she had feared, their target; and, worse, that her cosy expat life is in danger of crumbling to dust.

Elegantly written, with beautifully drawn characters and suspense dripping from every page, The Expats is a wonderfully confident debut.
