Review: Cold Kiss by John Rector

(pocket books, £7.99)

Ex-con Nate and his pregnant girlfriend Sara are on the run from their past, hoping for a brighter future. In a remote Nebraska diner they reluctantly pick up a strange hitchhiker, knowing they shouldn't but unable to refuse the $500 he's offering.

When a blinding snowstorm rolls in they are forced to seek refuge in a rundown motel and then their troubles really begin. Absolutely mesmerising from start to finish, Cold Kiss is an impressive tour de force of mounting tension and heart-stopping suspense that is quite literally impossible to put down.
