Poet O'Siadhail is toast of town as McAleese launches his book

Celebrated collection: Micheál O'Siadhail with former president Mary McAleese at the launch of his bookCondensing his life's work into one elaborate hardback, Micheal O'Siadhail was the toast of the town this week as his contemporaries turned out for the unveiling of Collected Poems at the Institute of Genetics in Trinity College Dublin.

The book was officially launched by Mary McAleese, who attended the event with her husband Martin. After a touching speech in honour of her old university comrade, guests joined Mary in raising a glass to the poet and to congratulate him on 40 years of work.

The Diary spotted Gay Byrne and wife Kathleen Watkins, poet and novelist Brendan Kennelly, as well as Bob Collins, chairperson of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland.

Artist Mick O'Dea provided the cover image for the book.
