Erotic novel puts Potter in the shade
AN erotic fiction book has overtaken 'Harry Potter' to become the fastest selling book ever released here.
'Fifty Shades of Grey' by British author EL James is the first of a trilogy tracing the relationship between a college graduate, Anastasia Steele, and a young businessman, Christian Grey.
It has made headlines across the world for its explicitly erotic scenes, and the "dominant-submissive" relationship between the couple.
And it has broken records here. The Nielsen Bookscan figures for Ireland show the trilogy has sold over 140,000 copies here since its release two months ago.
Dubbed "Mommy Porn" by the 'New York Times' because it is selling mostly to female readers, the trilogy of books is dominating the sales charts here, in the UK and the US.
The trilogy has held the number one, two and three positions in the sales charts here for the past seven weeks, and experts say sales show no sign of slowing down.
In fact, overall sales are likely to be even higher than given by Nielsen, which covers only print editions.
Book trade experts say 'Fifty Shades' is also breaking ebook download records here.
Sales of the trilogy are now in excess of 2.75 million copies in the UK, 15 million in the US, three million in Canada and combined sales are over three million in Australia, New Zealand, India and South Africa.
EL James is a London mother of two teenage sons who has been happily married for 20 years and is a former TV producer.
She started the 'Fifty Shades' trilogy as online fan fiction, inspired by the characters in the 'Twilight' books.
