Books: Genuinely creepy Nordic thriller proves itself to be a real page turner thrillers

You're Mine Now Hans Koppel Sphere, £6.99, pbk

Anna is the features editor of Family Journal, a popular if somewhat staid Swedish women's magazine. Happily married to Magnus, with whom she has a 10-year-old daughter called Hedda, Anna has to go away for an overnight planning conference with two of her office colleagues, Sissle and Trude.

On the trip she does something completely uncharacteristic and which she instantly regrets -- she has a passionate one-night stand with a handsome and much younger man who picks her up in the hotel bar. She makes it clear to him that it was a once only event, but Erik is charming and persistent and she meets him again.

When he starts filming her naked in the shower, alarm bells ring for her and she attempts to draw a line under the affair.

But Erik's overtures become more sinister and threatening and she begins to fear for her life. The police aren't interested, she can't tell Magnus and then her mother goes missing . . .

Hans Kopple, the pseudonym of a popular author of 35 children's books called Peter Lidbeck, had a worldwide hit with a book called She's Never Coming Back two years ago, and here he manages to up the ante considerably with a genuinely creepy Nordic chiller for which the term page-turner could have been coined.
