Books: A Lakeside chiller from writer at the peak of his powers . . .

thrillers Jawbone Lake Ray Robinson William Heinmann, £16.99, hbk

In the early hours of an icy New Year's Day at Ravenstor in England's Peak District a young woman, mourning the death of her infant son, watches as a Land Rover crashes through a bridge and falls into the frozen lake. Another car draws up and a figure holding a gun steps out to make sure the driver is dead.

The dead man is CJ Arms, a successful local businessman, and when his son Joe returns from London to comfort his mother and try to find out why his father died so surprisingly, he and the young woman known as Rabbit find themselves the target of ruthless strangers who will stop at nothing to prevent them discovering the mystery of what Joe's father really did during his extended visits to southern Spain.

This is a literary thriller of the highest order from a multi-award-nominated writer whose first novel, Electricity, is currently being filmed with Agyness Deyn (right) in the lead role.
