It doesn't take long for an old-school lefty to start waxing lyrical about Karl Marx. "There is a beautiful passage in Das Kapital where Marx explains the angst the capitalist feels when squeezing every ounce of value from the worker," Yanis Varoufakis explains from his home on the Greek island of Aegina.

"Capitalism enslaves both the rich and the poor," the 59-year-old economist, author and politician insists, comfortably stepping into the role of the infallible professor with charismatic confidence.
