Winnie and Nelsonis an intriguing biography. It begins with an accusation that Nelson Mandela beat his first wife, Evelyn Ntoko Mase. The incident is said to have occurred in February 1956, after Mandela tried to throw Evelyn out their home in Soweto, outside Johannesburg. “When she refused to leave, [Mandela] hit her with his fists and finally threatened to kill her with an ax,” Johnny Steinberg writes.
