Write stuff: Mary O'Rourke to share her tips for the top in workshop
Mary O'Rourke is to many the godmother of Irish politics.
But for those attending the 50 Plus Expo, she'll be showing off her other profession, as a writer, with a workshop for aspiring authors.
Ms O'Rourke, who has written several well-received books, said: "Tomorrow I'll be telling those who attend my workshop that one of the biggest tips, which I picked up in an American book, is to sit on your arse and prepare to work.
"This week I wrote about Christine Lagarde and a meeting I had with her years ago, when she was over in Ireland with the Troika.
"And I write about GAA games and I'm very keen on rugby. I like writing because I'm exercising my mind, I'm being creative.
"I like the idea of a finished product when I have my 1,000 words a week done."
The 50 Plus Expo show takes place today and tomorrow.
The free admission event will feature Eric Knowles from BBC's 'Antiques Roadshow'. The presenter will be offering free valuations of small collectibles and other items and larger items from photographs.
The event will also include free health screenings, talks, arts and crafts, workshops and cookery demonstrations.
There will be a free shuttle bus service to and from Athlone railway station, to Hodson Bay Hotel in Athlone, where the event is taking place.
The festival is from 12pm until 5pm today and from 11am until 5pm tomorrow.
