Poet President Michael D Higgins was in his element as he celebrated 40 years of promoting the craft in Ireland.

Mr Higgins and his wife Sabina welcomed representatives of Poetry Ireland to the Áras yesterday as the group marked its 40th anniversary.

Among the guests were renowned poet Theo Dorgan, our first Laureate for Children's Literature Siobhan Parkinson, and author and illustrator PJ Lynch from Children's Books Ireland.

Poetry Ireland has the aim of "connecting people and poetry" and receives funding from the Arts Council. It works to create performance and publication opportunities for poets.
