Claudia Carroll has told how the spectacle surrounding Graham Dwyer's trial inspired her latest book.

The actress and author's 13th novel, All She Ever Wished For, is due out next month. In it, one of the characters is chosen as a juror while also going through a messy divorce.

Carroll said that while researching the book in the Four Courts, she saw the interest surrounding the convicted killer's trial.

"I was down at the Central Criminal Court and there was a huge queue outside the door at eight in the morning, and I stupidly thought, 'They're queuing for jury selection'," she said.

"But no, it was for the public gallery to get into the Graham Dwyer trial. I got a real shock. It just felt ghoulish to me. This is someone else's life here.

"I was asked if I wanted to go in, but I couldn't listen to that. It was hard enough to listen to it on the news, let alone to be actually in the court."

Carroll said it got her thinking about what it would be like to be a juror in a high-profile case.

"I think it must really feel like you're on an episode of Judge Judy, yet you've got someone else's fate in your hands," she said.

Her Fair City character, feisty Nicola, return to our small screens this evening.

Tonight's episode sees car salesman Paul's troublesome ex making her way back to Carrigstown, much to Niamh's disgust.

Carroll said she reckons Nicola will always be infatuated with Paul to a certain extent.

"He's the one that got away," she said.

"She's kind of the Camilla Parker Bowles to Niamh's Diana."
