An Irish author has made it through to the shortlist of the prestigious Wellcome Book Prize in the UK.

Dublin writer Mark O'Connell is one of six authors who are in the running for the literary prize for his debut novel 'To Be a Machine', which explores transhumanism, or how humans can push the limits of their bodies through technology. Worth more than €34,000 to the winner, the Wellcome Prize celebrates the best new books that engage with an aspect of medicine, health or illness.

Critics have described his book as "profoundly unsettling and brilliant" and Mr O'Connell said that it was "thrilling" to have been nominated.

The winner will be announced on April 30.
