Barfly: The Dark Horse Inn

The last time your correspondent visited this quayside pub, the place was so empty it felt odd to pull up a stool and quaff a pint.
The barman seemed to agree as he spent the evening throwing strange glances at the interlopers as if our mere presence was grounds for suspicion. Under new ownership and with a tweaked name -- the White Horse is the now the Dark Horse -- it's still pretty quiet midweek, but at least now nobody glares when you order a drink and retreat to a dimly lit corner.
As these things go, the makeover is subtle: against one wall are moody, red-framed landscape paintings, while leather couches evoke the spirit of a 90s-style coffee-shop flophouse. On Thursdays, geeks are in for a treat as the first-floor function room hosts a gamers' evening.
IN THE GLASS: Pint of stout €4.50, pint of lager €4.70
AT THE BAR: Man reading evening paper having loud conversation with chap from eastern Europe
ON THE STEREO: Mood music
AND? One of Dublin’s few remaining early houses, the Dark Horse opens 7.30am
