There was much weeping and tweeting among the sideways haircut demographic that constitutes a large wedge of the Sin é clientele when it was announced this quayside bar was to close.

Four months later, however, Sin é would appear to have been granted a reprieve. With new owners -- the same team behind The Globe and RiRa -- the pub continues to trade and, split between a sunlight ante-chamber and a murky interior, remains its old, darkly cheerful self.

The biggest change, so far as we could tell, was that the previously impressive selection of specialist lagers has been replaced by a row of Heineken and Guinness taps.

But, considering it could have been another of those hollowed-out buildings with white-washed windows, we won't complain too loudly. Simply by continuing to trade it is a reminder that occasionally the doom-mongers get things wrong. Surely we can raise a glass to that.
