One of those pubs where men in lived-in faces stand in the doorway, pulling on cigarettes and chatting to passers-by, The Bachelor Inn is that most contradictory of prospects: a 'locals' pub in the heart of the city.

Entry is by a door adjacent to a somewhat dingy side-alley; once inside, you are whisked away from central Dublin to what could be a hard-bitten suburb. A fruit machine flashes by the long, narrow bar, while, on either side, regular patrons chug stout and debate last night's soccer and the day's racing.

Clientele divides into two distinct categories: Dubliners for whom the Inn is a second home, and just-off-the-Aircoach tourists in search of an 'authentic' Liffeyside experience.

If you don't belong to either, you will probably feel self-conscious, but it's worth persevering, as the porter is delicious. Besides, you've got to love a bar that adorns its exterior with quotes from the greats of Irish literature. The biggest surprise? It's one of the few Irish pubs with its own Facebook page.

IN THE GLASS: Pint of stout €4.50, pint of lager €4.80

AT THE BAR: Middle-aged chaps with tattoos, Continentals contemplating their first pint of Guinness

ON THE STEREO: Random chatter
