Watch: 'What Women Deserve' - powerful poem about the abortion debate

Slam poet Sonya Renee has performed a powerful piece for the American 1 in 3 Campaign.

The poem was inspired by a bus poster and has been viewed over 8,000 times. The piece is around the divisive subject of abortion in America, where the debate has been raging for some time.

The 1 in 3 campaign is described as a "grassroots movement to start a new conversation about abortion - on our own terms".

The campaign aims to use social and online media, "harnessing the power of storytelling to engage and inspire action" and encourage women to speak up about their experiences with abortion.

"Together, we can end the stigma and shame women are made to feel about abortion. As we... build a culture of compassion, empathy, and support. It’s time for us to come out in support of each other."

Abortion has been legal since the 1973 Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade, but the "effective availability" of the procedure varies from state to state. Abortion is one of the most controversial issues in American politics.
