A lion left bystanders terrified after he charged towards a toddler at a Japanese zoo.

The giant cat appeared to stalk the two-year-old boy, before lunging towards the small child.

Luckily for the child, and those standing nearby, the lion was halted by the safety glass barrier at Chiba Zoological Park, southeast of Tokyo.

But, Japanese zoo keepers have now said that the 200kg lion "simply wanted to play with the toddler". They detailed that the lion always acts this way when he sees small children, according to NTV News24.

Although, the video could suggest differently as experts suggest that most big cats in the wild target their prey once they've turned their backs.
