Syrian refugee cooks for the homeless every week 'to show his gratitude for his new host country'
This man clearly believes in the concept of 'paying it forward'.
Every weekend, Alex Assali, a refugee from Syria, distributes food to the homeless people of Berlin as a way of thanking the nation that gave him a new home.
A picture of Alex hard at work was posted by Berliner Tabea Bü on Facebook on Sunday morning.
She captioned the picture: "That’s Alex! A big shout out to him this morning. This man impresses me deeply."
Tabea explained how Alex was forced to leave his family in Syria, because threats were made against him by ISIS.
The refugee took no possessions and began the treacherous journey to Europe, via Lebanon, Cyprus, Egypt, Sudan and Libya.
He eventually arrived in Germany and has built a new life for himself there.
Despite having very little money and a paltry income, he gives away food to the homeless and those in need every Saturday in Berlin’s Alexanderplatz.
His sign reads: "I wish to give something back to the German people".
The heartwarming picture has also been shared on website Imgur where it has been viewed over 2.7 million times.
German site Stern report that Alex and Tabea met through the Berlin Refugio, a charity which provides shelter and community to people forced to flee their homes and move to a new country.
He cooks traditional Syrian food and often receives help from volunteers.
But if there’s no one to help, he goes shopping, cooks the food and serves it alone.
The world could do with lots more like him.
