Paddy Power may have to pay out on bets if the song can hold the top spot until Christmas

The much-publicised song written by secondary school students for their late teacher has hit the number one spot in the weeks coming up to Christmas.

Paddy Power were taking bets on the song to be this year's Christmas number one so punters are hoping the song can hold out on the top of the charts.

The song, 'My Hero' by Presentation Secondary School, was written as part of RTE's 'Big Music Week', which saw singer-songwriter Luán Parle and producer Gavin Ralston travel around the country to hold song-writing workshops in secondary schools.

Presentation Secondary School was one of two schools, in Clonmel and Longford, chosen to write and record their own song. They received four hours with their mentors and a professional recording session.

The students chose to write a song based on a late teacher of the school, Alice Strain, who was involved in a fatal car accident last April.

As a result of the "incredible" feedback, RTE have released the song on iTunes - and just in time for Christmas.

The proceeds from the single are going to a charity of the girls' choice and can be downloaded here.
