Good news for Tube commuters - the enormous rat who's photo went viral earlier this week was actually a member of Germany's rodent population.

It was widely reported that he was caught on the London Underground 'near Wapping'.

The fear-inducing photo of the giant creature was shared thousands of times, with several people remarking that its size meant the picture had been doctored.

So we have good and bad news for you.

The rat in question is from mainland Europe - much further away than we thought - but on the other hand experts have said that the photo is genuine.

Or could it be that the man holding the rat is very very small?

Here's hoping.
