There's something about Christmas that brings out the best and worst in advertising.

Christmas is a time for cheer, family and targeted advertising. Classic ads like the 'Holidays are coming' Coca-Cola ads have become synonymous with Christmas and can do no wrong. Others aren't so lucky.

We've compiled a list of some of the best and worst Christmas ads

1. Apple - 'Misunderstood'

This ad features a teenage boy who spends the entire holiday season glued to his smartphone, despite various attempts by adults in the family to disconnect him from the device. He then gives the family a gift they won't forget and they realise they 'misunderstood' his obsession with his phone. It has been viewed over 5m times.

2. Three - The Dancing Pony

A Christmas re-work of their famous viral ad (with over 7.9m views), this one is just as funny as the original with a seasonal twist. It has already racked up over 1m views.

3. Meteor 'Get Christmassed Elf'

Personally, the entire 'Get Christmassed' series would be in the worst list for me but I have bowed to pressure here in the offices as the majority agree that this ad should  be on the 'best ads' list. This ad has been viewed over 15,000 times on YouTube.

4. John Lewis Retail 2013

One of the best Christmas ads in recent years, this ad documents two friends who never get to spend Christmas together due to one being a rabbit and the other being a bear. When the bear heads off to hibernate, the rabbits sadness penetrates the viewer, and he sets out a plan to spend Christmas with his best friend. Set to a beautiful rendition of Keane's 'Somewhere only we know' by Lily Allen, the ad has racked up over 11m views.

John Lewis, known for thier Christmas ads, recently posted a 'behind-the-scenes' video showcasing the level of detail and the amount of work put into this year's viral, which has been viewed over 200,000 times.

1. Park TV

The most grating line in this stilted ad is, for me, the mother's line; "And I''m not getting stressed". The ad, which has been viewed 687 times, is an exact reworking of the UK ad for the same company- the only difference being the accents of the awkward actors.

2. Meteor - 'Carol Singing'

Personally I quite like this ad, but apparently Ireland did not agree. There were reports of the main actor in this ad receiving abuse on the street for some time after the ad aired - people did not seem to side with him in the carol-off.

3. Penneys - 'Got A Whole Lot of Things For Christmas'

This ad was created in 1996 but that doesn't excuse it from our worst Christmas ads list. The classical cover of the catchy Penneys jingle is bad enough by itself without the animation that has nothing to do with the retailer.

4. Meteor - 'Get Christmassed'

Meteor have churned out some brilliant, original, funny, touching ads in their time. This isn't one of them.
