Online outrage at fashion photoshoot depicting threat of rape

An Indian photographer has sparked online outrage by staging a photoshoot based on the dangers of assault and rape for Indian women.

The Mumbai-based fashion photographer claims that his work is not 'inspired by' the gang-rape of a young Indian girl in New Delhi in 2012.

The shoot 'Wrong Turn' by Raj Shetye shows a lone Indian woman, dressed in high-fashion items, on a public bus attempting to fend off unwanted advances of several men.

He dreamed up the shoot over two years ago as a way to highlight the issue of safety for women in India. He told Buzzfeed that "the message I would like to give is that it doesn’t matter who the girl is... It doesn’t depend on which class she belonged in – it can happen to anyone."

Shetye has received a lot of criticism about the piece, with some users calling the similarities to the 2012 New Delhi rape "disgusting".
