US Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps has unwittingly become the Internet's latest sensation.

On Monday night, prior to the 200 metre butterfly Olympics semifinals in Rio, Phelps was captured on camera with the most intense game face.

Sitting in the dressing room, cloaked in his USA hooded jacket and wearing large headphones, the 31-year-old Olympian appeared to be gearing himself up for the big event.

As his South African rival Chad le Clos shadowboxed in front of him, Phelps fixed him with a death stare.

This attempt at intimidation was caught by NBC cameras.

The 30-second clip went viral on Twitter almost immediately.

Phelps said afterwards of the intense stare: “I tried not to really even look at him. He does his thing, I do my thing.”

Eventually, Phelps finished secondnd in his qualifier, just ahead of le Clos, and set up another showdown in the finale Tuesday night.
