'Insta-famous' pooch Barkley the Pom passes away

One of the world's most famous canines has died, leaving almost one million fans bereft.

Social media superstar Barkley the Pom has passed away, to the sadness of his owner Elisabeth and his 900,000 social media followers.

Announcing the news on the platform, Elisabeth wrote that her "heart was ripped out".

"It was the most horrific freak moment that I find very hard to explain in detail, so I won't. But I need to tell you he has gone because I know many of you loved him too.".

"Life will never be the same without our tiny man. He was the core of our family & he was pure happiness. He made many people smile but you can never imagine what he did for me, his human".

The tiny black Pomeranian has collected almost a half a million followers on Vine and 430,000 on Instagram. He had racked up almost 90 million hits on the Vine app.

Barkely's third birthday was coming up on November 4th and the perfect pooch had worked with a number of celebrities as a result of his meteoric rise on social media. He had featured alongside all of the major Vine stars and even met Meghan Trainor.

Elisabeth told fans that Barkley passed away on October 26th due to a "horrible freak moment".

Vine star Cody Johns tweeted about Barkely's passing, writing "he will be remembered as a legend among social media pets".

Fans are sharing tributes to the little dog with the hashtag #RIPBarkleyThePom.

"I can't express enough how touched I am by the goodness of all you people on social media", Elisabeth wrote on Instagram.

"Thank you so much for telling me how Barkley touched your lives".

"Thank you again for loving my Barkley. Be assured that he would have loved each & every one of you too".
