British actor and broadcaster Stephen Fry has quit Instagram, saying he has been "hounded off" the photo sharing site.
He has more than 90,000 followers who have journeyed with him since 2013, but yesterday he posted his final image - a blank, black photo - before quitting the app.
He signed off with, “Newspapers, as ever, suck all the joy out of everything. Closing down. It was, briefly, fun. Bye.” and changed his bio on the site to read, “Hounded Off. Goodbye.”
Countless fans responded by asking him to return and asking him why he was leaving, to which he responded, “Oh just a snide Daily M thing that someone insisted on showing me thinking I’d be amused. It’s not wildly vile but enough to make me feel that my underwear drawer has been rifled through by a pervert… So I’ve given up on this little avenue of harmless amusement.”
One fan wrote, "those haters hate all. Don't feel special. But so feel special knowing that I and countless others love you unconditionally, you fabulous person. Much love".
Another said, "Yours is easily the most interesting and sweet Instagram profile, Stephen. Hope to see more of your wonderful posts soon".
The star, a prolific tweeter (he even announced he had wed his partner Elliot Spencer on the social networking site), has also taken a break from Twitter, to return in May.
