The link-sharing website Reddit has turned the new Irish abassador for Tourism into a meme.

Ireland's new Cultural Ambassador, Commander Chris Hadfield, has become the latest celebrity to take over the Ireland page on popular website 'Reddit'.

The retired astronaut, who became famous on YouTube, is in Ireland as part of a promotional tour in lines with his appointment as the new Cultural Ambassador.

It began with users posting real news stories related to Hadfield's activities on the site and users soon began creating their own.

Reddit users photoshopped Hadfield into a plethora of memorable moments in Ireland and into photographs with some of Irish history's key figures.

See below a gallery of some of the best images, hosted on Imgur and posted to Reddit.

Hadfield has been dominating the subreddit for some days now, and the moderators of the page even temporarily re-branded the section as 'Haddit' - a mixture of 'Reddit' and 'Hadfield'.

Commander Hadfield gave the customers at McGrory's pub in Donegal a surprise when he treated them to a rousing rendition of Danny Boy.

Tourism Ireland are creating three short films of Hadfield's five-day visit, which will be shared on social networking sites to highlight the country as a a holiday destination.

"I have been around the world more than anyone you've ever met, 2500 times or so, and I think that deepens your appreciation for just how beautiful certain parts of the world are, as well as the reaction from the people," Hadfield said.

"There was obviously a link with Ireland with my daughter studying here for several years, but it was like a blossoming friendship from orbit, it's been very interesting.

"I really wanted to come back and see Ireland, so to be cast in an ambassadorial role, I'll be seeing it with new eyes, which will be a real treat for me.

"I can't wait to come back in the future to meet people and travel around the country."
