Australia voted YES for marriage equality and the internet is a lovely place to be

Australia has voted in favour of legalising same-sex marriage and the internet is a lovely place to be this morning.

Two years after Ireland did the same there's a similar outpouring of joy and celebration and many a rainbow adorning Twitter.

"It is unequivocal, it is overwhelming," Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said of the survey result which saw the yes vote win by 61.6% to 38.4%.

South Australia was the first jurisdiction to decriminalise homosexuality in 1975 but it remained illegal in Tazmania until 1997 so this is a landmark moment in the country's history.

Thousands of people who gathered in a central Sydney park broke into a loud cheer and hugged each other and cried when the result  was announced.
