The death of a much loved Family Guy character has sparked an online petition as unhappy viewers take to social media to vent their anger. Warning - SPOILERS!

The death of family pooch Brian Griffin in the latest spisode of Family Guy has left many viewers unhappy with the series' writers.

Brian meets his maker after a hit-and-run and the family get a new dog, Vinny, but viewers are not pleased.

#BringBackBrian trended worldwide on Twitter following the news and an online petition was set up which already has over 89,000 signatures.

Several Twitter accounts have been set up to support the fictional dog including @BringBackBriann and @weWantBGriffin and a Facebook Page dedicated to Brian has over 750,000 likes.

Some users think that the storyline might be a ruse, along the lines of the episodes in which Stewie 'kills' Louis, only to find out it's all a dream.

The studio have asked their viewers to 'trust them' and said that they were 'very excited' about the storyline.
