That 'massive snowball fight' in Dublin is scheduled today but participants risk getting bashed by the blizzard as well as each other
It has been postponed and relocated but that epic Dublin snowball fight looks set to finally go ahead today.
Originally planned as a bout between Northsiders and Southsiders on O'Connell Bridge on Tuesday, it was scuppered at the last minute by a lack of snow on the bridge.
The clearly tongue-in-cheek 'unofficial' event, posted on Facebook and titled, 'Massive Snowball Fight with South Dublin' and referring to a "vicious snowball fight to the death" drew interest from 13,000 people with 4,500 claiming they would attend.
However as 3pm approached the organizers postponed it and asked potential attendees to suggest an alternative battleground (although some people went ahead with a bit of a battle on the bridge anyway).
Organizers ultimately decided on relocating to the Phoenix Park for 3pm today (Thursday) and a latest update has changed the time again to 1pm.
"Sorry about the changes but The Battle of Papal Cross will commence at 1pm. North v South to settle this... well I don’t know what we’re settling but we’re gonna bleedin kill each other!
"See you there!" say the organizers.
Given a Status Red alert has been issued for the entire country with people urged to be home by early afternoon and to stay indoors until Friday noon it would take a brave (or mad) soul to venture down to the Phoenix Park.
The Taoiseach has urged people to heed the Status Red warning as the storm poses a serious threat to life.
Whether or not the battle actually happens, people are having fun with the very notion of it.
"How we all gonna get there if the buses aren’t running? Not everyone has horses. #southsiderules" quipped one, while another added, "Its all out feckin war I say bring it on. Yeahhhhhhhhh!!"
Others have pointed out there may be safety issues, "lads weather taking a turn for the worse here.should we reschedule in the interest of health and safety? ?? Just saying like."
Who do you think would win?!
Meanwhile, Paddy Power made the Northsiders odds on favourites (1/5) to beat Southsiders (3/1).
Spokesman Paddy Power said: “There’s nothing like a snowball fight to settle old scores, but we have to side with the Northsiders on this one given that there’s an 83% probability that they will knock spots of the Southside snowflakes brave enough to turn up at The Phoenix Park tomorrow (Thursday). On a separate note, this could be the perfect way for the likes of Sinn Fein and the DUP to sort out their differences.”
