The staff of an Indian restaurant in Armagh said they were thrilled by the generosity of a diner who left them a tip of £1000 (€1144) for a meal that set him back just £79 (€90).

Waiting staff of the Indian Tree in Portadown were shocked by the generous tip, left behind by a local man who lives abroad. The businessman had dined with his wife and three friends last week at the restaurant.

The restaurant issued a heartfelt thanks to the diner on its Facebook page and said the boost was a great start to their New Year.

“A very dear and loyal customer of ours has made an incredibly beautiful gesture yesterday to show his appreciation for Babu's food and our service.

“He gave us all the most wonderful encouragement and motivation to keep positively moving forward against all odds.

“A great, beautiful and humbling start to the year indeed.”

The identity of the diner has been kept secret by the staff at his request.

Speaking to the BBC, the chef at the restaurant, Babu, said the tip had an enormous impact on staff moral.

“It is a very simple thing to express gratitude, but this has had such a big impact. We are still in shock,” he said.

“All the staff working that night will split the money as the customer said it was for everyone.

“I don’t think anyone at the restaurant has ever received such a massive tip, I definitely have not.”
