Leo Varadkar tweeted about his new socks and some eagle-eyed followers spotted a cheeky message
An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar chose today to tweet about his new socks.
Ever since his summer sojourn in Canada with Justin Trudeau when he wore a pair of Mounties socks with maple leaves, novelty socks have become the Taoiseach's 'thing'.
On the evening of the first day of the Irish Rail strike, which caused traffic chaos as up to 150,000 commuters attempted to navigate their way to work by alternative means, the leader of the country took a moment to tweet a photo of his new socks.
The word 'BYE' adorns a yellow pair while bicycles decorate another. A third features hurleys.

Zooming in, some followers spotted something else, a message reading, 'You are a ride'.
“You are a ride” according to one pair. #Zoooooom— Sarah-Jane Murphy (@sjanemurf) November 7, 2017
Others took the opportunity to make Brexit jokes and election gags.
You need to pull your socks up regarding the north of Ireland #Brexit— STAN ÓCAÍRBRE (@staniam50) November 7, 2017
You can wear the yellow ones after the next election. A shining example of style over substance.— Neil McC (@neilkmcc) November 7, 2017
Others were simply not amused by the whole thing.
Transport strike? Homeless? 13bn Apple Tax? Gangland murders? No, new socks are the important things!— roneymac (@ronanruaidh) November 7, 2017
Maybe you could donate them to all your loyal subjects who had to WALK TO WORK today.#railstrike today.#rail#dosomething— Trevor O Rourke (@trevdunboyne) November 7, 2017
