A Donegal carpenter went down a storm with the Roses and audience at the Rose of Tralee last night.

Daniel McLaughlin, from Buncrana, made the final three in the Escort of the Year 2017 competition after he impressed in carrying out his duties as escort for the South Australia and Cavan Roses.

"You are treating them very well, I believe," said host Daithi O Se.

"Yeah I am.  Jezz I'm hilt hi!  It hasn't been easy." replied Daniel who looked both wrecked and delighted at the same time.

"Look at the big happy head on that fella," added Daithi.

Unfortunately Daniel was pipped to the title by Thomas Lynch who bagged the €1000 prize.

Daniel, meanwhile, will be returning to carpentry following the festival. He is currently working on high rise apartments in Manchester and hopes to eventually have a career in natural medicine.

In his escort profile, he says, "Above all I love my roots and enjoy trips to the hills of Donegal where the kettle is always on the boil."
